MSW, University of Nebraska at Omaha Biography Born and raised in Council Bluffs, Iowa, the youngest of 11. My parents are immigrants from Mexico. Attended the University of Iowa and received BSSW in 1981. I received my MSW from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1987, and my Ph.D from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1993 from the Teacher’s College-Community and Human Resources. Socially, I love to play tennis when I can find partners! I always look forward to a good challenge because it inspires me to perform optimally. I enjoy being the most vocal cheerleader for the UNO-School of Social Work! We have an outstanding program with outstanding students, faculty and staff. I am asked to speak at many diverse functions regarding the School’s future initiatives engaging those areas most critical to social work; child welfare, mental health, health, social policy, diversity, gerontology. Professional Specialties Latino populations-any subject area, social work theory and diversity, social welfare policy, youth at risk and mentoring. Teaching Have taught: Introduction to Social Work and Social Welfare, Social Policy, Institutional Racism and Discrimination, Human Behavior and the Social Environment II, Working with the Minority Elderly, Social Work with Latinos, Introduction to Chicano/Latino Studies. Research Diciendo Nuestros Cuentos: Las Vidas de Mujeres Latinas, Routledge Press (2002); Mentoring Latino Children: Impact on Self Concept and School Performance (2003) Service Numerous boards in the Omaha and Council Bluffs areas; YWCA, Chicano Awareness Center, Human Relations Commissioner for City of Council Bluffs. In 2004 Dr. Barrons-McKeagney was recognized as an NU Pioneer with a
