Biography Born and raised in Omaha, the middle of 8 children, Patty received her MSW degree in 1989 and has completed all the course requirements for a PhD in Public Administration (ABD). Prior to joining the joining the faculty at the School of Social Work in 1993, Patty worked in an inpatient psychiatric hospital, with the State Foster Care Review Board, and in clinical social work. Along with teaching responsibilities, Patty chairs the Admissions Committee at the School of Social Work. She has two children and enjoys traveling, bicycling, hiking, backpacking, gardening, and reading in her leisure time. Along with teaching, Patty’s primary responsibility is chairing the Admissions Committee at the School of Social Work. She also coordinates the service learning projects in the undergraduate program. This model has received attention from the local to the national level, and with Professors Sather and Weitz, Patty has presented papers about the School of Social Work’s service learning approach at the Annual Program Meeting of the Council On Social Work Education (CSWE) in 2000, the Baccalaureate Program Directors Annual Meeting (2002, 2002, & 2003), the Midwest Biennial Social Work Education Conference (2002), and the Policy Conference (2002, 2003). Patty has also been a participant in the Interdisciplinary Service Learning Project at UNO and has presented papers on the project at the American Association of Higher Education Conference (2003). Patty has received a grant to advance service learning in the curriculum from the Nebraska Consortium for Service Learning Professional Specialties Service learning as a pedagogy Teaching Introduction to Social Work Research Under peer review: “Stimulating Student Interest in Community Change.” Article submitted to the Journal of Community Practice. Co-authored with Paul Sather and Barbara Weitz. Board member of Root to Fruit, a grassroots initiative sponsored by the Mammel Foundation to fund $10,000 grants to small organizations in select areas of Omaha.
