Biography

Jane DiVita Woody is professor of social work at the University of Nebraska-- Omaha, where she has taught in the graduate program for over twenty-five years. She holds a Ph.D. in English from Michigan State University and an M.S.W. from Western Michigan University. She is a clinical member and approved supervisor of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy and a certified sex therapist (American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists).

Woody is the author of a new book for the general public: How Can We Talk About That? Overcoming Personal Hang-ups So We Can Teach Kids the Right Stuff About Sex and Morality (Jossey-Bass, 2002). She is co-editor of and co-author of four chapters in the book Ethics in marriage and family therapy (Washington, DC: AAMFT, 2001). She also wrote Treating Sexual Distress: Integrative Systems Therapy (Sage, 1992) and has published research and other articles on divorce, sex therapy, sexuality, ethics, marriage and family therapy, and youth mentoring. In summer of 2002, she published an article in the journal—Family Therapy—titled “Media Coverage of Child Sexual Abuse: An Opportunity for Family Therapists to Help Families and Communities.”

Dr. Woody developed and wrote the initial family mentoring grant, which was a component of a broader College of Public Affairs and Community two-year grant funded by the U. S. Office of Education in Fall, 1996. She was also funded by the University Committee on Research to study mothers’efforts in sex education and to develop and evaluate an educational program for promoting mothers’ efforts. Dr. Woody was a two-time recipient of an endowed chair, the David C. Scott Diamond Professorship, College of Public Affairs and Community Service, and held this chair from 1996-2002. She was also co-recipient of an award (with R. H. Woody), presented by the Nebraska Association of Marriage and Family Therapy for “Outstanding Dedication and Contribution to Families and the Practice of Marriage and Family Therapy,” April, 2002. In June, 2004, She will give a presentation at the Annual Conference of the National Parent Teacher Association in Anaheim, CA.
